Original drawings by Julie Rhodes

All my Original art is drawn by hand on Bristol board 500 in pencil. My realistic drawing style has developed over many years as an artist. I enjoy the challenge of hyper realism / photo realism (making each drawing as lifelike and ‘believable’ as possible) My original drawings aren’t digitally enhanced, they are all painstakingly drawn by hand. I draw from my own reference photos, sketches and also my slightly vivid imagination.

Hyperrealism

Hyperrealism isn’t about copying a photograph. For my art I like to use many reference photos to draw from as well as sketches and the vision I have in my head for the finished piece. My artwork isn’t drawn from one photo, I’m always trying to capture much more than that in my drawings, like a moment in time. The light and shade and the slight movement of an animals fur and whiskers.

Planning a drawing

Every drawing can take hours of planning, from the subject and pose through to the background and lighting. They can take between 80 – 300 hours to complete because of this. They are made up of thousands of small abstract lines and marks capturing the light and texture in the fur and these make up the finished piece. I like to see them as an abstract artwork hidden within realism.

My Work

I hope my work is an accurate representation of nature but I also want to express something more so the viewer can see all the tiny details that often go unnoticed in the moment. At first you can see a ‘tiger’ but I want you to look beyond the subject and see the textures changing through the fur and the way the light reflects in the eyes. Pencil is the perfect medium for detail because it can create such tiny marks and textures as fine as a pinhead. Therefore I use it for all my work.
